Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
