The Power Struggle For the Cable News Network Shows How Flawed US Journalism Now Is.

On Thursday evening, amid swirling speculation about an incident at Brown University, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins used social media, noting the confusion and guiding the public to her network’s 9pm newscast.

Even though the network is hardly a perfect news source, her message rang true to many. It stands as one of the outlets where there exists reality-based and generally dependable reporting – particularly during fast-moving events like the one unfolding close to a New Hampshire storage facility.

A Vulnerable Position Amid a Corporate Tug-of-War

Yet CNN, now middle-aged, finds itself in a vulnerable position as two huge media empires compete for ownership of its parent company, Warner Bros Discovery.

Regardless of who wins, the future of CNN has turned into a high-stakes game of corporate ownership, not as a question of what benefits the information-seeking public.

“This represents another instance of the deep structural problems with origins in many years of regulatory actions,” noted Victor Pickard, writer of “Democracy Without Journalism?” and a academic specializing in media policy at the University of Pennsylvania.

The conjecture about the future owner of Warner Bros Discovery – will it be Netflix or Paramount Skydance? – overlooks a broader point.

“It is often framed as a financial tale with influential figures as the main characters, but there is very little discussion of the public interest,” Pickard said.

A Further Layer: Political Influence

This situation is made more complex by Donald Trump’s opinions about a network he has long portrayed as perhaps his main “fake news” adversary.

Think back to the cries of “CNN sucks!” at the president’s rallies, his team's disciplinary withdrawal of reporter Jim Acosta’s press credentials, or his tense exchanges with Collins in press briefings.

Trump now says that CNN needs new ownership. You can read that as ownership that will protect him from journalistic oversight. That is a factor in why he appears to come down on the side of Paramount Skydance, which has made a hostile bid.

He has grounds to like that suitor more. For one thing, it is run by David Ellison, son of the pro-Trump Larry Ellison, one of the world’s richest people.

The company, owner of CBS News, also recently installed the right-leaning Bari Weiss, noted for her “anti-woke” beliefs, as the top editor of that venerable news network.

A Future of Further Instability

Notably, if Netflix wins, CNN and other cable outlets would first be spun off into a separate entity. Such a move could be a relief to many at the network, but it’s far from a safe harbor. That structure could pave the way for CNN for a future sale. The cycle continues.

If you ask Timothy Wu, much of this is a violation of antitrust statutes, anyway. The influential voice of big tech’s dominance recently argued that competition laws should block both deals.

“Either merger would be detrimental to the country, and both should be opposed by the government,” Wu stated.

The Core Problem and a Potential Solution

No matter the outcome regarding CNN, the underlying crisis remains.

“The present media landscape is a very anti-democratic system, but we ought not succumb to learned helplessness,” Pickard noted. Policy decisions – originating in the 1930s and 1940s – helped to foster this hyper-commercialized monster, and different policy decisions can tackle it.

Will that happen in an era where the top communications regulator refuses to acknowledge that the agency is independent? Change is very unlikely now, but that is not to say it will be impossible forever.

Initiatives that support independent news organizations, bolster local journalism, subsidize public media, and prevent the consolidation of media power in very few hands are within reach – they are vital for a robust democracy.

When it comes to media ownership, size does not equal quality. And news organizations including CNN cannot be tools in the most recent acquisition battle.
