Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
