Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
