The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
