At least 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
